This is a substantial printer both in terms of physical size, and weight. More designed for a small office environment than to home use, the J6510 is more than a desktop printer.
The obvious reason for the increased dimensions is the large scanning surface. Being able to scan larger-sized documents (11x 17") may be a selling feature for some folk.
The paper drawer expands to facilitate loading print papers of larger size as well.
The unit instlls easily into both a LAN and wireless environments. The print and communications software are remarkably 'clean' and efficient. The Brother system doesn't have a lot of the 'apron strings', or huge set up files, featured by some other manufacturers. The "Control Center" interface software is quite good for all applications of the unit but requires a slight learning curve to personalize applications when coming off other brands. Assistive software is built-in, quite comprehensive and relatively user-friendly, no need to search websites for help or trouble-shooting.
The system uses 'newer' LC79 cartridges (i.e. not the same as the ones in your last Brother, and usually not the ones 'on sale' at Costco). The print output seems to be quite impressive compared to other brands, and the cartridges comparatively well-priced. The cartridge uses a vacuum/gravity feed system with a tube feed to the print heads - it seems to be quite effective and trouble-free. Caution needs to be exercised replacing cartidges as there are a number of LC types, all with very minor (unnoticeable?) physical differences. Re-fill shops can screw these up quite easily.

| Problems: No real problems. The scanner/top cover attachment is quite flimsy for the weight of the unit and care has to be exercised raising and lowering that for 'balance' purposes. The paper drawer, while functional, has, again, a 'flimsy' feel. A top loader for envelopes and or photo paper would have been a benefit. |
